HISTORICAL ROOTS
Originally known as The Romsey Hotel, this landmark establishment was built in 1860, making it the oldest pub in town.
The Romsey Hotel was born from the vision of Lachlan Robertson, son-in-law to William Campbell, a pioneering figure who migrated from the Isle of Skye, Scotland, in 1853. Situated on Main Street, Romsey, the hotel quickly became a cornerstone of the community. Offering first-class accommodation, superior wines, and a reputation for excellent catering, it hosted social events and provided respite for weary travellers and even a well-known judge who would happily halt court proceedings for a quick “refreshment”.
There is so much history within the walls of this venue; we are always keen to hear tales from the locals and encourage all to share their experiences with us.
THE VENUE
The recent renovation has been our opportunity to reimagine the space, welcoming back locals who share stories of yesteryear. With a commitment to maintaining the warmth of a country pub while taking our menu and service to new heights, The 1860 Romsey offers a familiar yet revitalised atmosphere for all to enjoy year-round!
Our venue is warm and cosy during the coldest months of winter and spacious and breezy when the sun is out. The massive beer garden boasts a caravan bar surrounded by many established apple and chestnut trees and is one of the best seats in the house on a sunny afternoon. Inside you'll find a pool room, bistro with spacious private dining, plus front and back bar areas.
Our food style reflects our love of entertaining and hospitality. We take pride in offering pub classics, serving modern bistro dishes with finesse and feature large family-style dishes that the whole table can enjoy. All of it from fresh, seasonal and local produce.
THE COMMUNITY
Sibling to The Lancefield Hotel, The 1860 Romsey offers the same community feel with its own unique identity. Just as Romsey and Lancefield have distinct and historical qualities within the Macedon Ranges, our venues celebrate the individuality of each township while fostering connections and camaraderie between the two.
With footy tipping, pool, sports on the big screen, local hour, and live music in the beer garden, there's always something happening at The 1860.
For our friends travelling from further afield, Romsey is located just 40 minutes from the airport and an hour from Melbourne. Our three main entertaining spaces—the beer garden, bistro, and bar—provide ample room for casual gatherings, table service dining, and private functions for all occasions.
